Lighthouse opens new high school

Lighthouse Academy of Fredericksburg has opened a new high school that currently extends through the 10th grade.

Each Friday, students will go into the community to explore history, government, architecture, ecosystems and more.

Each Friday will have a different theme and be fully instructional.

Lighthouse Academy is located at 10713 Tidewater Trail.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOL TUNING MOWERS

Employment Resources Inc.'s new vocational center at the Gladys H. Oberle School is doing fall tuneups for lawn mowers and string trimmers for local residents.

The ERI instructors teach students how to do tuneups on a variety of brands of lawn mowers and trimmers.

All tuneups are done by students under strict supervision by trained vocational staff.

Tuneups include inspection and trouble shooting, replacing spark plugs, oil change for two-or four-stroke engines, rewind inspection and replacement, sharpening blades, power washing the unit and mower deck, replacing filters, adjusting carburetors, two test starts and any other needed work. Owners must pay for replacement parts.

There is no charge for the tuneup, but a donation to the program is appreciated.

democrats set event in stafford

The Stafford Democratic Committee will host "Jazz Up Columbus Day" at Jimmy the Greek Restaurant on State Route 610 on Monday, Oct. 8, 5-9 p.m.

The event will include four dinner selections, three children's meal choices and the chance to meet local candidates. Adam Cook, candidate for Congress in District 1, and Aneesh Chopra, who is seeking the party's nomination for lieutenant governor in 2013, will attend.

Pete Fields, a classical guitarist and also a former Stafford supervisor and planning commissioner, will provide entertainment.

Open hand hosting fundraiser oct. 10

Open Hand of Fredericksburg will host a Wildtree Tasting Party on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 6-8 p.m. at New City Fellowship, 200 Prince Edward St.

Wildtree offers organic pantry foods. The fundraiser will support Open Hand's Summer Youth Worker Programs, which teach readiness and life skills.

The event is free.

holmfield art event raiseD funds

The recent John Holmfeld Art Collection Exhibit and Sale raised nearly $5,000 for the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts building fund.

The event was held throughout August. Funds were generated through online purchases, gallery sales and silent bids.

Following Holmfeld's death in October 2011, his family donated his art collection to the center for the building fund.

Fundraiser set for 'A Cat's Friend'

A Cat's Friend, a cat rescue volunteer organization in Woodbridge, will hold a bowling fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 7, at Liberty Lanes in Massaponax. Hours are 2-5 p.m.

The cost is $15, with shoe rental included. Preregistration is required.

K.G. YMCA SETS RACES FOR KIDS

The King George YMCA will sponsor its fourth annual Fall Festival 5K and 1-mile Kids Fun Run on Oct. 14.

The 5K begins at 8 a.m., followed by the Kids Run at 9:30. Both races begin and end at the King George YMCA.

The event is sponsored by NSWC Federal Credit Union, Community Bank of Tri-County and EXIT Realty Expertise.

The race is part of the Rappahannock Area YMCA race series. Proceeds benefit the King George Fire and Rescue Company volunteers.

Relay for life fundraisers set

Team True Believers with the Relay for Life in Orange County will hold fundraisers at Mama's Pizza of Locust Grove, 32311 Constitution Highway, on Monday, Oct 8; Monday, Nov. 5; and Monday, Dec. 3.

Hours are 5-8 p.m. for each. Part of the evening's proceeds will go to the Relay for Life team.

There will be activities for children and information about the American Cancer Society.

AARP driver safety course scheduled

An AARP Driver Safety Course will be offered at the English Oaks Senior Apartments, 11 Darlington Way in Stafford County, on Oct. 10 and 11. Hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. both days.

museum hosting textile exhibits

The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center has two contemporary textile exhibits this fall.

"Community Artist Series: Fiber Art" opened recently in the Mansard Gallery. It exhibits work of several local fiber artists.

"Quilt National," a traveling exhibition on loan from the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, opens Friday in the historic Council Chamber.

FALL PLANT SALE STARTS monday

Rappahannock Adult Activities will host its first fall plant sale through Friday at the agency's location at 750 Kings Highway, about three miles east of the Chatham Bridge.

The sale will feature chrysanthemums and pansies.

The agency provides a community-based day program for people with intellectual disabilities.
