Fredericksburg may have a rich art culture, but it lacked a modern art presence--until now.
The new Weadon Studios and Fine Art gallery will open at 305 Hampton Ave., near the Falmouth bridge, on Friday, Oct. 5.
Owner David Weadon previously had a photography studio in the same location. He noticed that his clients were driving to Richmond and Washington, D.C., to buy modern art pieces and felt that this type of art should be more accessible locally.
"We're trying to make a true fine arts gallery," Weadon said.
The galleries in downtown Fredericksburg tend to focus on local artwork, Weadon said. He appreciated that but thought it needed to be expanded on.
"It's going to be a nice eclectic blend of artists," said Jen Reynolds, who is helping Weadon coordinate the grand opening.
The gallery will display the work of 23 local and national artists, several of whom will be at the opening to talk about their work.
Works by nationally renowned and best-selling artists will be placed side by side with those of local artists.
"It can only be good for everybody to bring up this caliber of art," Weadon said.
Diversity will be one of the main themes in the gallery.
The artwork portrays a variety of subjects through pottery, sculpture, mixed media, film and more.
One exhibit plays an independent movie that was filmed in the gallery before it was set up.
According to Reynolds, Weadon wants to bring a new dynamic of art to the area.
"We're hoping that Fredericksburg will embrace it," Reynolds said.
The Oct. 5 opening will have a private viewing session from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be open to the public from 7 to 10 p.m.
