POOCHES ON PARADE

Everyone loves a parade, and this Saturday is going to be no different, except man's best friends will be hitting the streets.

It sounds too good to be real: a dog parade led by Elby Brass, Elvis and a hound dog in a convertible, a Jack Russell race, dogs in elaborate costumes. Believe it. The Fredericksburg Dog Fair is happening.

This Saturday marks the fourth year for the downtown Fredericksburg event, which will kick off at 9:45 a.m. with a costumed dog parade from Maury stadium to the Riverfront Park.

If the weather is nice and the dogs manage to get their owners off their respective couches, there could be a Guinness World Record set for "most costumed dogs in a parade." Again, believe it.

There will be entertainment for humans and dogs alike, including a canine casino, a dog show, food, beer, a dog adoption park and music from jazz group Dangerous Kitchen.

Dogs with a competitive streak can put their money where their muzzle is on the dog raceway--a sprint course that can accurately measure the speed of your pooch. Winners will earn medals, including one for the slowest dog on the planet.

Paradegoers, dogs and people 16 and under get free entry into the dog fair, but there is a $10 entry fee for everyone else. Proceeds will benefit the Fredericksburg's Gone to the Dogs charity and will support area dog adoption and spay-neuter programs.
