Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center has recognized one of its nurses for outstanding service to her patients.
Alison Rauh was the first winner of the hospital's new Daisy Award. She received a trophy and certificate at a ceremony Oct. 1.
Rauh, 44, is a nurse in the infusion unit. She serves patients who come to the hospital regularly for outpatient chemotherapy, blood transfusions or other intravenous treatments.
Rauh became a registered nurse in 2009. She worked at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge before transferring to Spotsylvania Regional. She joined the new hospital in 2010, before it opened, and helped set up the infusion section.
She is a resident of Spotsylvania County. Her husband, Paul, is a sergeant with the Prince William County Police Department.
The Daisy Award is a recognition program started by the Daisy Foundation to recognize superior nursing. The California-based foundation was set up in 1999 by the family of Patrick Barnes, who died of an autoimmune disease. The family felt that Barnes had received outstanding nursing care during his illness.
Spotsylvania Regional will present the award monthly to one of it 220 registered nurses. Nominations come from staff members and patients.
Also nominated for the inaugural award were Karen Gardella, a nurse in the cardiac catheterization lab, and Penny Rivas, a labor-and-delivery nurse.
Nancy Littlefield, chief nursing officer, told the nurses during the award ceremony that the program will recognize clinical expertise and "everything you do extra, that extra word, that extra bit of compassion, that extra feeling that we are guarding the patients for safety and quality."
