John W. Elwell

John Willis "Jack" Elwell, 82, of Fredericksburg died peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Elwell was a former Marine Corps captain and special agent with the FBI, from which he retired in 1980. He had a long history of civic service to the Fredericksburg community as an officer, leader and member of many civic, religious and social organizations including St. Mary's Catholic Parish, Montfort Academy, the Optimist Club and the Greater Fredericksburg Sports Club. Most recently, he had been active as a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and the Semper Fi group.

Mr. Elwell is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marilyn; their five children, John P. Elwell of Houston, Texas, Susan E. McCaleb and her husband, John, of Penhook, David W. Elwell and his wife, Sue, of Dumfries, Charles J. Elwell and his wife, Marsha, of Roanoke and Michael J. Elwell and his wife, Diana, of Frisco, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Dr. Kyler Elwell and her husband, Dr. Brad Silver, of Dallas, Texas, Bryan McCaleb and his wife, Jackie, of Mechanicsville, Mark McCaleb of Richmond, Erin Elwell of Arlington, John Elwell of Frisco, Patrick, Evan and Annie Elwell of Roanoke, and Brittany, Sean, Catherine and Rebecca Elwell of Frisco; one great-grandson, Jack McCaleb of Mechanicsville; a brother, Paul Elwell and his wife, Joan, of East Aurora, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Mary Elwell, of Tonawanda, N.Y.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Olive Elwell of Buffalo, N.Y. and his brother, Gordon, of Tonawanda.

A rosary will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg with visitation to follow until 7 p.m.

A Mass celebrating Jack's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
