Thomas J. Houser Jr.

Thomas J. Houser Jr. of Fredericksburg, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, peacefully at home.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, JoAnn; daughters Deborah Dosch and husband David, and Deneen Bernard and husband Joe; son David Houser of Washington, Utah; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brother James Houser.

Mr. Houser earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Hanover College, served in the U.S. Army as a counterintelligence officer in Germany (1954-56) and received a law degree from Northwestern in 1959. In 1969 he moved to Virginia to fulfill three presidential appointments as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, member of the Federal Communications Commission and White House Telecommunications Policy Executive Director. One of his most proud accomplishments was his contribution to the Radiation-Exposed Veterans Compensation Act, signed by President Reagan and enacted in 1988.

He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed the NFL, boating, fishing and golf. After retirement, the Housers ran Renaissance Manor Bed and Breakfast in Stafford County from 1990 to 1997 and Tom later served on the boards of the local Habitat for Humanity and Chamber of Commerce.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity.
