Has the city planned for the spent hens?

Regarding "Think of the chicks," [Oct. 2], I think the letter writer refers to chickens you will have to buy, usually through the mail, to start a flock. Hatcheries kill the males because they don't produce eggs and are not the right birds to raise for meat. This has been all over the Internet lately.

Since you can keep only three or four hens at a time, you will have to get rid of the spent hens to make room for the new young hens. This is something the city has not adequately planned for. Right now it is illegal to slaughter in your backyard, and I don't know if spent layers are even good to eat.
