Authorities identify man killed by train
The pedestrian struck and killed by an Amtrak train Wednesday has been identified as a Spotsylvania County man.
The Virginia Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim Friday as Charles Hollowell, 74.
Capt. Mike Harvey of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing, but "it appears the victim was crossing the tracks at a bend in the tracks and was unaware of the approaching train."
He said the engineer sounded his horn and applied the train's emergency brakes before it hit the man.
The train was carrying about 200 passengers when the incident occurred about 4 p.m. along Benchmark Road, just north of the crossing at Mine Road.
