Verdi T. Fitzhugh

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Verdi Thompson Fitzhugh, 76, went to meet our Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He was born Dec. 5, 1935, in Stafford County to the late Oliver and Lucy Berryman Fitzhugh.

SFC Fitzhugh grew up in Stafford, graduating from Walker-Grant High School in 1953. He worked at Marine Corps Base Quantico from 1953 until he joined the Army in December 1958. He served three tours in Vietnam.

He leaves to mourn his brother, Clyde O. Fitzhugh of Stafford; his sister, Joyce L. Fitzhugh of Fredericksburg; two nieces, Melika Fitzhugh of Somerville, Mass., and Sharlotte Fitzhugh of Albuquerque, N.M.; and nephew Michael Fitzhugh of Dallas.

A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg. A funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Shiloh Baptist Church Old Site in Garrisonville. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.
