The following students have been selected as the Fredericksburg Optimist Club's Students of the Month for October:

;">Mallory Kirby, daughter of Sam and Annmarie Kirby, was selected at North Stafford High School. She was named both a National Merit Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Mallory is a co-captain on North Stafford's debate team and competed at the district, regional, and state levels for VHSL. During the 2011-2012 school year, she planned and executed a charitable 5K race that raised more than $1500 for rheumatic disease research. Mallory is the vice president of programs for the National Honor Society, has been a core leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for three years, and teaches Sunday School for 4- and 5-year-olds at Mount Ararat Baptist Church. She is a member of both the cross country and swim teams. Mallory attended the Governor's School for Life Science and Medicine over the summer; this program strongly influenced her desire to become a doctor. Following high school, Mallory hopes to attend either the University of Pennsylvania or Johns Hopkins University and major in neuroscience.

;">Daniel Patrick McManus, son of Patrick and Mary Elizabeth McManus, was selected at James Monroe High School. He is active in Key Club and yearbook, National Honor Society treasurer, participated in varsity swimming and soccer and was captain of the varsity cross country team and SCA representative. He was a Kick-Off Mentor council member and served on the executive council of the leadership team.

Daniel was named outstanding student in Advanced English 11; Biology II, Anatomy and Physiology; Discrete Math; and Advanced Placement Statistics. He was named a Monroe Scholar and nominated for Jefferson Scholar and was a member of the University of Mary Washington Chemistry Titration Tournament Champions.

In the community, Daniel is a Youth in Philanthropy Leader and participated with the Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association. He plans to attend a four-year university.
