State transportation plan session is Dec. 3

The postponed public meeting in the Fredericksburg area on the state's Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program will be held in early December.

The original meeting was postponed because of Hurricane Sandy.

The rescheduled meeting will be held at Massaponax High School on Dec. 3, starting at 6 p.m.

There will be an open-house session where transportation officials, including members of the Commonwealth Transportation Board, will be available, along with information on area projects.

Details on the current 2013-18 six-year plan will be available. Comments will also be taken on the 2014-19 plan, a draft of which will be released in the spring.

The plan includes hundreds of millions in funding for current and future transportation projects statewide and in the 14-county Fredericksburg District.

School helps students affected by hurricane

Stafford County students, staff and parents are collecting supplies for an elementary school that was hit hard by superstorm Sandy.

A staff member at Margaret Brent Elementary School hails from Broad Channel, N.Y., where many residents lost homes and possessions when the storm ripped through their town.

So the Stafford school started a collection for the students and families of the public school in Broad Channel. The collection will continue through the weekend, and a truck is scheduled to deliver the goods on Monday.

Requested items include book bags, blankets, small games and activities, new or gently used coats, mittens, gloves, scarves and socks, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, water in gallon jugs, first-aid supplies, bleach, diapers, baby wipes, baby food, toiletries, buckets, batteries, flashlights, mops, brooms, contractor bags and work gloves.

Items can be dropped off at Margaret Brent Elementary on Mountain View Road or at The Icing on Courthouse Road.
