DRIVER DIES IN TRAIN CRASH IN FAUQUIER

A Page County man was killed yesterday when his car collided with an Amtrak train at Bealeton in Fauquier County.

James E. Wood, 54, of Shenandoah died at the scene of the accident, according to Corrine Geller, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police.

Wood was driving a 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier when he crossed the double tracks and pulled into the path of a northbound Amtrak train, Geller said. The collision happened at 4:56 p.m. near the 11200 block of Remington Road.

The train had departed Charlottesville, headed for Washington, with 200 people on board. No one on the train was injured, police said.

The accident happened at an "uncontrolled" crossing, Geller said. The intersection has a stop sign and railroad crossing sign but no crossing arm or flashing gates.

State police continue to investigate the incident, Geller said.
