Herndons celebrate 50th anniversary

Ronnie and Jean Herndon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 17. This photo was taken of the former Gloria Jean Perry and Melvin Ronald Herndon in 1961, a year before they were married, in Jean's childhood home near the corner of Caroline and Herndon Streets in downtown Fredericksburg. Ronnie still jokes he spent so much time courting Jean that the city named a street after him. Pictured with them is Ronnie's favorite little sister, Kathy.

Jean and Ronnie have resided in Fredericksburg all these many years, and their love and kindness have endured. They are from a different time, and somehow they have managed to retain this unique and wonderful quality of sweetness, respect and strength. If you don't know them, you'll never meet anyone like them. When they dine at local restaurants or are just out and about, occasionally someone will notice their native accents and ask, "So where are you all from?" They just smile and say, "Well we're from right here!"

There have been a lot of changes over the years but their love remains a constant, and they remain a constant to all whose lives they have touched.

Oh, and by the way, little Kathy did eventually turn into a princess!
