Herbert S. Wilburn Jr.

Herbert S. Wilburn Jr., 92, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, at home.

Mr. Wilburn started his photography career at the Richmond Times-Dispatch at the age of 16. He served in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk during WWII, at which time he established the Combat Camera Group and served on the USS Herbert. He returned to the Richmond Times-Dispatch following the war, and then worked for the National Geographic Society as a photographer. Mr. Wilburn traveled on assignment to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. He retired from the National Geographic Society as a senior assistant editor after 33 years of service.

Mr. Wilburn was an inventor, musician and publisher of The Fredericksburg Times magazine. He attributes his success to his late wife of 62 years, Marian.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda Shepard and husband Greg, Wendy McArtor and husband Michael, Anita Darras and husband Norman and Kelley Kramer and husband Carl; sister Rose Marie Monteiro; 10 grandchildren, Justin, Grayson and Garrett Shepard, Kelley Reinhart, Kristen Amos, Barrett Sullivan, Kennan McArtor, Savannah Dorsett, and Lauren and Cary Kramer; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.
