Clarence E. Austin

Clarence E. Austin, 87, of Lynchburg died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Guggenheimer Nursing Home.

He was born March 18, 1925, in Prince William County, a son of William and Hannah Austin.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Edna Blankenship Austin; his parents; two brothers, Alvin Austin and Russell Austin; and two sisters, Thelma Rawlings and Eleanor Toone.

Mr. Austin attended high school in Northern Virginia. He entered the Army in 1943 to serve his country. In October 1944 he participated in the liberation of the Philippines. He returned to the United States and remained in the hospital for nine months. He was employed by the federal government for 31 years. Prior to retirement he was the safety director of Marine Corps Base Quantico. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Shriners and Disabled American Veterans.

He leaves to cherish his memory six nieces, Ann Toone and Janice Russell, both of Virginia, Mary Felini of Texas, Joyce Keeley of Missouri, Cecilia Ford of Florida and Bonnie Dooley of Texas; and two nephews, Wayne Austin of Alabama and Donnie Rawlings of Virginia

The family also thanks his caregivers, Guggenheimer and Centra Health Hospice.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, with the Rev. Jim Whitaker officiating.
