George L. Kurpiel, 70, of Stafford County passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, as gently as he lived at the family home. He fought a determined battle with cancer and its complications for 10 months.
George's passion was cooking and sharing his culinary treats with family and friends. He enjoyed working several crossword puzzles every day. Fishing and playing bridge rounded out his favorite pastimes. George loved the sea and longed to live near the water, a goal achieved in 2000 when he moved to Stafford from a 35-year residence in Centreville.
Graduating from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1964, George sailed during the Vietnam era. His most fond possession was a World War II sextant, given by the captain to cadet, which he used to circumnavigate the globe. George worked for the federal government in the maritime arena for the balance of his career.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patricia; and his neighbors, sister-in-law Jane Gallagher and husband John Sylvester.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Friends are always welcome at the family home.
George will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind and gentle soul. Please, no flowers; but donations may be made to a charity of choice.
