Historical site at risk!

Driving down Fall Hill Avenue toward Fredericksburg the other evening, I noticed a "For Sale" sign that startled me: 1.8 acres zoned commercial.

As an old history major and an ex-National Park Service interpreter/historian, I knew the acreage contained the last CSA artillery emplacement extant, placed there in December 1862. (One or two other artillery sites are well-known and protected). This parcel was part of the Benoit plantation, which explains its current existence.

With the 150-year anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg occurring this month, maybe the National Battlefield Park Service, the Civil War Battlefield National Trust, or some private individual will be able to save this artillery site for another 150 years.
