A Nation Remembers: Battle of Fredericksburg 150th anniversary special events. Friday, Dec. 7, to Saturday, Dec. 15. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park hosts special, ranger-led walks Dec. 7-9; evening talks Friday and Saturday at historic churches; simulated shelling of town on Sunday; 1-3 p.m. Sunday procession by participants, some carrying roses, from Rappahannock River to Hurkamp Park to Sunken Road, with a "culminating event" at the park's Kirkland Monument; "real-time" tours Dec. 11-13; rare visits to Belvoir and Franklin's Crossing in Spotsylvania County on Saturday, Dec. 15, with a "City of Hospitals" tour starting in Market Square at 3:30 that afternoon. Fire on the Rappahannock. 1,200 military re-enactors to stage two battle scenarios on Saturday, Dec. 8: 10 a.m. Union army pontoon-bridge crossing of Rappahannock River at City Dock, assault up Rocky Lane and Lower Caroline Street, and fighting at Riverfront Park; at 2 p.m., the Irish Brigade's assault on Confederate forces at Marye's Heights, at UMW's Trench Hill, Hanover Street and Sunken Road. Visit Union camps at Ferry Farm in Stafford and Confederate camps at Slaughter Pen Farm on Routes 2/17 in Spotsylvania. On Sunday, period church service at Slaughter Pen, living history at Ferry Farm, field hospital at Brompton and 1-3 p.m. hallowed-ground processional. Tour the 18-wheel, interactive, multimedia Virginia Civil War 150 HistoryMobile on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-9. On Friday, the HistoryMobile will be at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, 1013 Lafayette Blvd. On Saturday and Sunday, it will be at Chatham Manor, 120 Chatham Lane in southern Stafford County, on the heights occupied by the Union army during the Battle of Fredericksburg a century and a half ago.
