A man already wanted on cocaine-related charges in two other localities was arrested in Stafford County early Friday after he nearly ran a deputy off the road, authorities say.

Sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said Deputy Brandon Gates was on routine patrol on Plantation Drive near its intersection with South Gateway Drive in southern Stafford about 1:27 a.m., when a vehicle left its lane and headed toward him.

Gates swerved to avoid a collision, then turned around to stop the vehicle, Kennedy said.

The driver had a strong odor of alcohol, Kennedy said, and failed several sobriety tests. In addition, a small bag of cocaine was found in the suspect's jeans; the man told police the jeans were not his, Kennedy said.

Linnell Sylvester Burrell Jr., 34, of Gloucester was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of cocaine, having an open container of alcohol while driving and failure to maintain his lane.

Police also learned that Burrell is wanted on four drug-related charges in Gloucester and Middlesex counties.

Burrell was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
