K.G. DECA helps MDA
King George High School's DECA chapter has events to benefit Muscular Dystrophy Association

On Nov. 12, the DECA chapter at King George High School hosted a 5K run and kids' 1-mile fun run to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

DECA members directed the event with help from volunteers from other school organizations and sponsorship from local businesses.

There were 17 runners in the 5K event and 25 in the fun run with participants from running clubs in the county's elementary schools.

Ian and Hannah Koepfinger won the men's and women's all-around in the 5K event. Aden Cupka and McKenna Mollner were the winners of the kids' run.

The top-three finishers in the 5K run by age group and gender were:

45-plus:

Men: Paul Koepfinger, Mike Schrantz and Roger Kniceley.

31-45:

Men: George Mading, Brian Kiser and Neil Richard.

Women: Anne Koepfinger and Annie Nester.

19-30:

Men: Taylor Kimbel.

Women: Ciera Mading, Laura Filkiski and Jennifer Henman.

12-18:

Men: Ian Koepfinger and Jonah Bryant.

Women: Hannah Koepfinger, Elizabeth Richard and Jessica Nester.

The top-three finishers in the kids' run were:

Boys: Aden Cupka, Andrew Green and Jeramiah Collins.

Girls: McKenna Mollner, Ellie Meyer and Victoria Phillips.

This year, DECA is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as the chapter's community service project. Juniors Madison Mading and Anna Kniceley are heading the project.

MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.

Several families in King George get assistance from the MDA.

Donations to the DECA drive will be accepted through Dec. 14 and may be sent to: DECA at King George High School, 10100 Foxes Way, King George, Va. 22485.
