Return to story
As a downtown resident for 10 years, I've had the opportunity to witness the lack of order that accompanies the annual Christmas parade. With the police tied up directing traffic, etc., the public seems to sense that normal rules don't apply.
Before the parade, parking violations abound, with driveways blocked, people parking the wrong way on one-way streets, physical altercations in front of children for parking spots, shouted epithets, and the like. After the parade it's every person for himself as mass exodus begins. This means to many of our departing neighbors that trash goes anywhere but in a trash can or their vehicles; instead, our streets, curbs, and lawns become trash receptacles. My personal favorite was the feces-filled diaper tossed on our front lawn last year.
A few hours after the parade ends come the obnoxious drunks stumbling home along with their version of holiday cheer. Thus, I close with thoughts of the season: Happy holidays. Peace on earth, and good will to all!
