They were only following precedent. When Ronald Reagan ran for re-election in 1984 he had more than doubled previous deficits after campaigning on a balanced-budget promise. He won in a landslide.
We also re-elected George W. Bush who had turned a balanced budget into $500 billion annual deficits. Maybe we have short memories, or perhaps the people realize the president has little control over deficits.
