program slated for siblings

The disAbility Resource Center is accepting applications for Sibshops, an interactive day or games and activities for brothers and sisters who have a sibling with a disability.

The program provides siblings with the opportunity to talk and share their thoughts with others who share similar experiences.

Sibshops will be offered for siblings in grades one through five, 1-4 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the center, 409 Progress St.

Cost is $5 per child or $10 per family.

spotswood award nominations set

Spotsylvania County is accepting nominations for the county's prestigious Governor Spotswood Award, which will be presented March 14.

Nomination deadline is Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m.

The award is presented for contributions to the community of Spotsylvania through words, actions and/or deeds. Recipients will have shown "integrity, courage and loyalty," and "brought honor to the county while maintaining personal discipline and etiquette," a press release states.

Nominees must be Spotsy residents. Nominations also may be made posthumously for a former county citizen.

Elected officials are not eligible for consideration.

Stafford Dems set 'hail to the blue'

The Stafford Democratic Committee will host "Hail to the Blue," an inaugural gala on Saturday, Jan. 12, 7-11 p.m. at the Riverside Center in southern Stafford County.

The evening is black-tie optional. Proceeds will support candidates for office in 2013.

ART EXTRAVAGANZA SET IN STAFFORD

Stafford Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will hold an art extravaganza on Saturday, Jan. 19, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Rowser Building, 1739 Jefferson Davis Highway.

The event will include hands-on artistic activities for children, including painting, bead work, sand art, edible art, and more. Children are advised to wear old clothes.

Parents must remain with their children. Registration is $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

REGISTRATION FOR SOCCER UNDER WAY

Spring 2013 registration is open for the FSCI Recreation Academy League.

The academy provides weekly games and skills training from a licensed professional coach.
