PETERSBURG APPEARS IN PRODUCTIONS

PETERSBURG (AP)

--A history-based production filmed in Petersburg will premiere in January. The Progress-Index reports that a three-part documentary, "The Abolitionists," will be aired on the PBS series "American Experience" on Jan. 8, Jan. 15 and Jan. 22. The series was filmed in Petersburg, Richmond and Powhatan County.

In February, the National Geographic Channel will air a two-hour special, "Killing Lincoln," that was shot in Petersburg. They city also was featured in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."

MONITOR MEMORIAL PLANNED IN HAMPTON

HAMPTON

--The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Navy are dedicating a memorial commemorating the USS Monitor and its crew on Saturday at Hampton National Cemetery.

The Civil War ship made nautical history in the first battle between two ironclads (against the CSS Virginia) in the Battle of Hampton Roads March 9, 1862. It ended in a draw. The Monitor sank about nine months later in rough seas near Cape Hatteras, N.C. Sixteen of 52 crew members died.
