Charles A. McClean, 95, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Stafford County, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital with his children at his bedside.
Mr. McClean was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Weehawken, N.J. He was a graduate of Weehawken High School and New York University College of Engineering with graduate work in patent law and business management.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II in the Pacific. Mr. McClean retired in 1981 from Airco Welding Products, where he was employed for 44 years in various areas including engineering, sales, advertising, training and international marketing. He was the author of several textbooks and numerous technical articles. From his worldwide travels he built an extensive library of slides and, after retirement, enjoyed presenting more than 100 armchair travel shows in local retirement and nursing homes. He was a lifetime member of both the American Welding Society and Elks Lodge No. 2290 in New Jersey.
He lived in Bergen County, N.J., for 37 years and was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dumont. In 1983, he relocated to Stafford County, where he was an active member of St Peter's Lutheran Church and the Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary.
Mr. McClean was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Hazel Klump McClean; and his wife of 64 years, June A. Maebert McClean.
Survivors include his son, Bruce McClean and his wife, Karen, of Spotsylvania County; daughters Karen Hudson of Woodbridge and Donna Polagye and her husband, Larry, of Sussex N.J.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.
A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Stafford. Interment will follow at noon in Quantico National Cemetery.
