I am British-born but an American resident and citizen for 12-plus years. Each recent occasion of mass murder like Newtown raises the same question--if every other advanced nation in the world places severe controls on personal weapons, why does America insist on allowing lethal guns to almost everybody?
I am no pacifist, coming from a military family and with a 30-year Navy career myself, but the other concern I have is the culture of violence we face. How can anyone say that children and mentally unstable people are unaffected and uninfected by the example set in movies, video games, and ferocious, mindless violence in such "sports" as Ultimate Fighting?
