Gun control can allow oppressive government

The Washington Post, The New York Times, and the usual suspects--now even including The Free Lance-Star--are filled with articles calling for a ban on assault weapons as used by Adam Lanza. The media frenzy is approximately the same level as the anti-war articles that swept the Democrats into power in Congress in 2008, so it appears that gun control is almost assured and the newspapers' agenda will be realized.

We, the public only know what is reported. It was originally reported that Lanza had hundreds of rounds of ammunition, two handguns, and a Bushmaster assault rifle. Those innocent young victims were not even cold before the media and politicians were shamefully calling for the ban on assault rifles.

Our Declaration of Independence was written by men who were entering a war with a tyrannical government. They wrote: " whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it."

Our Founding Fathers were not concerned about hunting, target-shooting, or even self-protection when they established our Second Amendment. It was so the population would not be defenseless against tyranny from our own government.

So who benefits from a ban on assault weapons? Gun control was established in the Soviet Union, Turkey, Germany, China, Guatemala, Uganda, and Cambodia in the 20th century and as a result 56 million defenseless people were rounded up and exterminated.

If we are quick to jump on the bandwagon brought on by the horrible crime in Newtown, we must make sure our actions will bring the desired results, and not just act as feel-good measures for politicians to crow about-- or worse.
