Hundreds brave icy Atlantic for Penguin Swim

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP)

--More than 600 people took a dip into the frigid Atlantic Ocean for Ocean City's 19th annual Penguin Swim.

The New Year's Day event raised more than $80,000 for the philanthropic arm of Atlantic General Hospital.

The crowd gathered on the beach in front of the Princess Royale hotel on 91st Street. Water temperature was in the low 40s, so few lingered for more than a few seconds.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reported that one musician carried bagpipes into the icy water. Others wore costumes.

Maryland's ban on arsenic in chicken feed takes effect

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)

--Maryland has become the first state to ban an arsenic additive in chicken feed.

A law banning the additive is among new state laws taking effect on Tuesday.

Last year, state lawmakers passed a bill banning the use of Roxarsone, a chemical used to help the birds grow and fight parasites.

Pfizer Inc., which distributes Roxarsone, stopped selling the chemical in July after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration study found higher levels of inorganic arsenic in chicken treated with the additive than those that were not.
