LOW Lions present grants

The Lake of the Woods Lions Club honored 10 recipients recently with the club's third annual Teacher Innovation Grants.

The winning educators were chosen from 38 Orange County public school teachers who submitted applications.

Recipients represent six of the county's nine schools, and the grants will support a range of lessons and programs related to science, Virginia studies, music, language arts, civics and math.

Recipients included:

OCHS Apprentice at Orange County High School.

Applications of Trig: GPS at Orange County High School.

Foreign policy and national security curriculum enhancements at Orange County High School.

Listening Center for Civics at Locust Grove Middle School.

Character Counts guidance materials at Unionville Elementary School.

Friends Read Every Day language arts program at Unionville Elementary School.

Music Across the Grade Levels at Gordon Barbour Elementary School.

Jamestown/Yorktown Outreach Program at Locust Grove Elementary School.

Classroom Bird Feeder Watch program to connect the county to the Cornell University database, Lightfoot Elementary School.

Eureka! Microscopes at Lightfoot Elementary.

The club referred an additional application to its Sight Committee, which awarded a supplemental 11th grant to support the acquisition of a Kindle Fire tablet to enhance learning for vision-impaired students in an Orange County High School classroom.

The club works in partnership with the Orange County Education Foundation to promote the program among public school teachers.
