No comparison between Newtown and abortion

I do not understand the point of the letter regarding the number of abortions performed on the particular day that 20 children and six adults were killed in the Newtown massacre ["2,700 abortions," Dec. 20]. There is certainly no comparison to be made.

Abortion may be regrettable, but the total of all abortions ever performed is infinitely less significant than the tragic deaths that occurred last week in Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The death of any sentient person who loves life and is loved by others is incredibly sad, and when that person is the victim of a gruesome murder, it is horrifying. The devastated families of the Newtown victims may never completely recover from their ordeal, and even those of us who have merely witnessed and empathized with them may never be the same.
