Daniel Webster Mitchell, 90, of Fredericksburg passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013.
Mr. Mitchell was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Mitchell.
Survivors include his son, Daniel Wayne Mitchell of Fredericksburg; daughter Donna Mitchell Henabray and her husband, retired Air Force Col. William Henabray, of Lexington Park, Md.; grandson Jason Scott Mitchell and Brandy and their daughter, Peyton Isabella, of Fredericksburg; granddaughter Sarah Stemann, her husband, Tim, and their daughter, Ruby Madeline, of Olney, Md.; and sister-in-law Esther Snellings of Fredericksburg.
Dan was a member of "The Greatest Generation," having served honorably during World War II with a Navy aviation rating, qualifying him to frequently work on Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber aircraft.
He was a past president of the Fredericksburg Civil War Roundtable and served as an adjunct Civil War guest lecturer at Germana Community College. Once an avid Civil War collector, some of his more notable artifacts were displayed at The National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C.
A service will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors.
