A woman was shot Friday and the man who police believe wounded her then fatality shot himself, police said.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. at the Fall Hill apartment complex in Fredericksburg.

The woman, 22, of Woodford had gone to the apartment of an ex-boyfriend with whom she shares a child, police said.

She told police the man shot her. She was seriously wounded with at least one gunshot to the chest, police said.

She was able to make it outside the apartment to a car where an adult family member was waiting along with the woman's 2-year old child, said Natatia Bledsoe, information officer for the Fredericksburg Police Department. The woman's family member called 911.

The man, 42, and the woman, were both transported to Mary Washington Hospital, where she is in serious condition.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital about 6:30 p.m. His name will not be released until next of kin have been notified, Bledsoe said.

It is not yet clear why the woman went to the apartment or why she was shot.

The investigation is ongoing.
