A Washington man is facing charges in an attempted robbery at a mall jewelry store Saturday night.
According to Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office, two armed men walked inside the Zales jewelry store in the Spotsylvania Towne Centre just before closing time around 9 p.m.
The store clerk, who is a student at the University of Mary Washington, and an off-duty Virginia State Trooper wrestled with one of the men and were able to stop him from getting away, Pearce said. A mall security guard saw what was going on and also assisted, he said.
Michael Anthony Richardson, 49, of Washington, is charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, false identification to law enforcement and identity theft. He is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
Pearce said Richardson initially gave them a false name and an identification card that belonged to someone else.
Pearce said a male and female believed to be connected to the crime fled the scene and have not been located. Police do not believe any of the suspects got away with any cash or jewelry, but the case is still under investigation and they are following up on leads, he said.
A Zales store manager could not be reached for comment.
