An estimated 1.8 million people attended Obama's 2009 inauguration. Only about 800,000 are expected to show up for his second inauguration Monday.
Sorry, Mr. President, but that's the way it works.
Once again, there are dire predictions about what will happen during Obama's second term. Mostly they are the same predictions that were uttered before his first term.
In 2009, the Republicans warned that before Obama's first term was up, Islam would be America's state religion and no one would have guns because government agents would confiscate anything with a trigger.
Well, I'm still a Baptist and I still have my old shotgun. So much for those predictions.
But the Republicans still haven't given up. I was talking with a couple of GOPers the other day and, just to stick the knife in a little deeper, asked, "Do you have your tickets to the inauguration yet?"
"Go watch someone who wasn't born an American take the oath of office?" one guy snapped back. "Never!"
"You mean you don't think that anyone who was not born a citizen of the United States should be president?" I asked.
"No, I don't!" the man stated emphatically.
"What about George Washington?" I asked.
"What about George Washington?" came the reply.
"Well, he wasn't born a citizen of the United States. He was born an English citizen."
"Well, that's different," the man said.
"What about John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and William Henry Harrison?" I asked. "They were all born before 1776, so they were also born British citizens. Do you want to remove them from the list?"
The two men just growled and walked away, mumbling something about "crazy liberals" as they went.
Trying to cheer them up, I yelled, "Look on the bright side! Gun sales are way up because of Obama's Gun Violence Task Force! He's creating more jobs for gun salesmen."
They didn't even turn around. I really hate picking on Republicans, but sometimes they just beg for it. When they do, I try not to ever let them down.
