Here are some odds and ends from the world of Fredericksburg-area business:

Spotsylvania County-based defense contractor SimVentions Inc. has leased another 11,300 square feet at its headquarters at 11905 Bowman Drive, bringing its total space there to 29,700 square feet. The firm expanded based on contracts received in 2012 and anticipated new work this year. About 108 people now work for SimVentions, and the company plans to add about 30 jobs this year.

CBRE has been selected to handle property management at the Bowling Green Plaza and Madison Plaza shopping centers at 332 W. Broaddus Ave. and 16 Madison Plaza Drive, respectively.

Fredericksburg-based Marstel-Day LLC recently won a contract to provide environmental services to the U.S. Army for up to three years at Army Regional Environmental and Energy Offices in Maryland, Georgia, Missouri and Colorado. The company also received three Environmental Business Journal awards for 2012: one for business achievement for a small firm, one for social contributions and one for project merit.

Tim Thompson was installed last week as president of the Fredericksburg Area Builders Association. Danna Middleton served in that role during 2011 and 2012.

The University of Mary Washington's School of Business and the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance will hold a "speed networking" event Feb. 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Anderson Center across from Eagle Village. The event will give the local business community a chance to meet juniors and seniors in UMW's College of Business, and allow students to practice networking skills. People who are interested should contact FRA executive Linwood Thomas by Jan. 31.

The Frenchman's Corner, which has a store in the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in downtown Fredericksburg, was the No. 1 independent retailer of Neuhaus Belgian chocolates for the fourth straight year in 2012. The company also has a store in downtown Culpeper.

The Grog and Tankard at 1243 Jefferson Davis Highway in Stafford County has opened. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, focusing on appetizers, kabobs and burgers. It's also a sports bar and features live music several nights a week.
