The following students are Fifth-grade Math Problem Solving Challenge winners for December:

The Noteworthy Select Choir of Rockhill Elementary School, under the direction of music teacher Kara List, performed for the SCPS central office staff in the school board chambers on Dec. 19.

Widewater Elementary

The Geography Bee was held Jan. 7. The following students participated: Tyler Sivia, Natalie Hendrix, Marian Kamara, Fathiyah Eyiowuawi, Logan Williams, Adam Echane, Ben Kennedy, Riley Hensley, Zahra Sajjadi and Andre Nesbit.

Winners are as follows:

First place--Andre Nesbit

Second place--Tyler Sivia

Third place--Adam Echane.

The school winner, fourth-grade, Andre Nesbit, will take a written round that will be submitted to the regional competition. Destine Bradshaw is the Focus teacher and judges were Angela Ewald, Chad Armstrong and Kristen McKinney-Nash.

Counselor Melissa Greene recognized the following students for their acts of kindness which was the word of the month for December: Johnan Casiano, Joellaine Duku, Janiya Johnson, Jelsy Kameliz, Eduardo Echeverria, Samato Sok, Hannah Hearn, Delon Pressley, Christian Watson, Evelin Portillo, Faith Mulder, Aiyanna Corbin, Kenneth Carcamo, Darian Years, Keyla Rodriguez, Cheyenne Smith, Emma Schubnel, Emma Gietek, Zara Nti-Brew, Karal Alvarez, Trina Cox, Pamela Benavides-Barahona, Jade Buckles, Davian Garcia, Patrick Sullivan, AJ Gryder, Matthew Allen, Joash Escobar, Vanessa Merrill, Kylan McCulloch, Gus Gonzalez, Moner Ahmad, Tyrek Wright, Andrea Alvarez and Peter Stehly. Students and parents were treated to a special breakfast with a presentation of medals and a book made for each honored student by their classmates.

Michaela Johnson, seventh- and eighth-grade resource teacher, is the 2013 Teacher of the Year. Michaela was chosen by her peers. Cathy Washington, seventh-grade math teacher, and Rebecca Richey, sixth-grade math teacher, were also nominated.
