Spotsy officer shoots, kills pit bull

Date published: 1/25/2013

A pit bull was shot and killed by a Spotsylvania County detective after an officer was attacked during an arrest Thursday evening.

Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said detectives located a man who was wanted on three felony warrants in the Timbers subdivision in the Chancellor area around 8 p.m.

Detectives were in the 300 block of Burman Lane trying to take the man into custody when he attempted to escape, Pearce said, and a nearby pit bull began to attack.

"One of the detectives was attacked by an aggressive pit bull and the officer was forced to fire his weapon, killing the pit bull," he said.

No one else was injured.

Pearce said it was unclear whom the pit bull belonged to.

Josh Williams, 24, of Spotsylvania was arrested on the warrants charging him with charges of aggravated malicious wounding, assault and attempted escape. No new charges were placed as a result of last night's arrest.

Pearce said the shooting is under investigation.
