A Spotsylvania man was arrested on multiple charges early Thursday following a pursuit that started in Fredericksburg, went into two surrounding counties and ended back in the same city neighborhood it started in.

According to city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe, detectives in unmarked cars were in the Mayfield area about 12:20 a.m., when they spotted the suspect driving. The detectives knew his driver's license was revoked because of a previous DUI conviction.

The detectives followed the Pontiac Grand Prix as it left the neighborhood, went onto the Blue and Gray Parkway and continued west on Plank Road to northbound Interstate 95. Bledsoe said the driver swerved multiple times and his speed was erratic.

A marked police cruiser joined the chase on I-95, but the driver ignored the flashing lights and continued north. The Pontiac left the interstate at U.S. 17 in Falmouth and drove back into Fredericksburg over the Falmouth Bridge.

Multiple marked units were involved by this time.

The car continued south on U.S. 1 into Spotsylvania, where it turned left onto Harrison Road and went back into Mayfield via Lafayette Boulevard and Dixon Street.

During the episode, Bledsoe said, the driver struck curbs twice, ran two red lights and flattened one of his tires.

Bledsoe said the driver finally made an abrupt turn from Airport Avenue onto Duke Street, where he abandoned the car in the front yard of a house in the 200 block. The driver then ran and jumped over a fence into a backyard, where officers surrounded him and took him to the ground.

Police said the driver tossed a vial of PCP during the brief foot chase. The vial was recovered.

Christopher Dale Lewis, 32, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, driving while revoked for DUI, resisting arrest, felony eluding, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of PCP with the intent to distribute. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
