Daniel W. Gollhardt

Daniel William "Danno" Gollhardt, 65, of Stafford County lost his battle with pancreatic cancer Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013.

He was born to the late Donald and Delores Gollhardt on July 23, 1947, in Kenmore, N.Y. He was also predeceased by a brother, Ronald Gollhardt.

Dan graduated from Osborne High School in Manassas in 1965 and joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1965 to 1968. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Dan joined the Manassas Park Police Department in 1968. He married the love of his life, Nancy Garland, on March 14, 1970. They resided in Manassas until he joined the Fairfax County Police Department, where he worked from 1971 to 1994. After years on the street, he transferred to the Juvenile Bureau as an investigator. While in Fairfax, he and Bonnie Kraut were instrumental in starting the Child Services Unit. Fairfax County was the first department in this area to work strictly with child abuse.

After retiring, he continued to serve the community by joining the Alexandria City Police Department as a commander of records, working diligently on the Red Light program for Alexandria. He worked there for almost 15 years.

Dan finally decided to retire to spend more time with his family and to hunt and fish. He was an active member of the Hookem & Bookem Fishing Club and Constable Sportsman Association Club. He loved to fish and hunted anything that he was allowed to legally shoot. He also loved the beach, taking his family to Myrtle Beach almost every year, and going on cruises to the Caribbean every few years.

Dan is survived by his wife, Nancy; and his two children, who will cherish his memory, John and Christina. He is also survived by a loving granddaughter, Jheri Taschanz (Jonathan); three great-grandchildren, Madison, Ezekiel and Emma; a brother, Thomas Gollhardt (Terri); sisters Pamela Mollenauer, Beverly Ziebell (Scott), Sheila Gollhardt and Melanie Rust (Dave); many nieces and nephews; and his two best beagle friends, Mollee and Emmee.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Mullins &Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. Interment will be at 1 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery.

Bonnie Kraut, Gary Healy and Police Chief Earl Cook will give the eulogies. Pastor Mike Crabill will officiate.

Members of the Gollhardt family thank Capital Caring nurse Sandy Moore and neighbors Jeanette VanTassel, Alice Petitt and Burton Collins, whose help was much appreciated in assisting with chores toward the end.
