Gun permits not as common as story states

Cathy Dyson's "Who We Are" series about gun owners in Virginia grossly overstates the number of concealed carry permit holders in Virginia [Feb. 17, 18]. Dyson states, "One in five adults in the state had a permit to carry a concealed weapon in 2011, according to a United States Government Accountability Office report."

In looking at a July 2012 GAO report titled "Gun Control States' Laws and Requirements for Concealed Carry Permits Vary across the Nation," page 67, the numbers for Virginia are approximately 279,000 permit holders with an adult population [over 20] of 5,917,339 people.

So the numbers indicate 4.7 percent (or about 1 in 21) of the adult Virginians with concealed carry permits, not the 20 percent (or 1 in 5) as Dyson indicates.
