'Drop-kick' verdict a true miscarriage

Unbelievable is the word to describe a miscarriage of justice that occurred when a student was "drop-kicked" by his football coach, who was given a slap on the wrist by our judicial system, while the student's father was sentenced to jail. ["Coach freed, father jailed," Jan. 31].

It was stated that the coach should be excused for his actions due to his history of attention deficit disorder, poor impulse control, and the fact that a felony charge may hinder his lifelong goal of becoming a firefighter.

One should also not forget that the coach's father is Spotsylvania County's emergency management chief.

The media and our government frequently address a concern for our children's safety on school property and this includes the issue of "bullying."

Children need to feel safe with the adults in charge of their care and guidance.

It is our responsibility as parents, grandparents, teachers and all adults to ensure their safety.

Coach Hart's actions were more the role of a "bully" than that of a coach when he drop-kicked a 12-year-old boy.

Our school administration and judicial system making excuses for reckless behavior is an injustice to our children, their parents and the citizens of Spotsylvania County.

What example are we as responsible adults making for our children if we accept this ruling?

I trust this injustice will be corrected for the good of all children and their future.
