Left uppercut meets a right to the solar plexus

Date published: 3/7/2013

When anyone writes a political letter to the editor, he or she is immediately attacked. Then supporters counterattack. Insults are hurled back and forth. "Stupid" and "idiot" and "moron" are in many of the comments. I hope the FLS does not clamp down too hard. The comment threads are entertaining and sometimes hilarious.

But the animosity speaks volumes. We act appalled as politicians refuse to compromise. We get sick and tired of them blaming one another for absolutely everything. But to compromise would likely be political suicide. God forbid a Democrat concur with the right's claim that lots of these "assault rifles" are only aesthetically like a military weapon. God forbid a Republican concur with the left's claim that most genuinely credible scientists overwhelmingly see global warming as a serious threat. The truth is irrelevant.

If this letter is published, I fully expect to be pummeled by--should I say--lefts and rights. Bring it on, people.

Our politicians are exactly what we ask for and exactly what we deserve. It has finally dawned on me where the blame lies: right there in the mirror.
