Editorial on the GOP was not objective

Date published: 3/12/2013

Your recent editorial comment, "Pie-in-the-face gang" [Feb. 18] was distasteful. The opinion seemed to suggest that there is no "good" person in the Republican Party. I am not in tune with the two political parties but, sad to say, this opinion was ill-conceived.

The opinion painted a bad picture of the Bushes. As a reminder, former President George H.W. Bush served this country very well; so did his son, George W. Bush. You may not agree with George W. Bush on some of his policies, but there are people out there who think he did his best while serving as president.

There is nothing Jeb Bush has done that deserves your opinion to disqualify him from running for the presidency. After all, he served Florida well when he was governor.

I have been following your past praise for Sen. Mark Warner, but what your newspaper has failed to tell its readers is that Sen. Warner has not lived up to his supposed moderate stance. He votes the party line in the Senate.

When I was a journalism student in Nigeria, I was taught to keep ideology in check when writing opinions. I was taught to present "balanced facts." Sadly, what I see here is opposite.

Let us adhere to the principle of journalism ethics: objectivity. It's unfortunate that this is lacking in your newspaper.
