Why are federal workers taking the hit?

Date published: 3/13/2013

Regarding Rep. Rob Wittman's much appreciated letter of March 5 ["Cut spending, yes, but not workers' pay"]--I am a federal employee with five years' time as an enlisted USAF member, followed by 28 years of civilian service as a GS employee. I find it hard to stomach that we, the dedicated employees at the lower echelons of government, are being asked to forgo or sacrifice a very substantial part of our income to resolve a political impasse while other workers in America--the ones fortunate enough to be employed--are being asked to give up little or nothing.

I and many others cannot afford to be furloughed, and it is highly discriminatory for only federal employees in certain pay grades or careers to be asked to make this sacrifice.

I would give my life for my country; I have given it the best of my gifts and abilities for more than 33 years. Does that not matter to the power players in D.C.?

I also ask of others who believe and have stated that it's only fair that federal employees be singled out (we're allegedly overpaid) three things: Have you or someone you loved risked your life by serving your country as a member of any branch of the military?

Have you worked evenings and weekends--often at ungodly hours--to ensure that our government stays atop of world events, including satellite breakups, missile launches, and other possible threats to national security and that of our families?

Have you worked daily on a military installation, wondering if at some time--as evidenced by 9/11--you might be the one who won't be going home to family, friends, and loved ones, should a terrorist act occur?

Walk a mile in my shoes.
