Alicia Espinel

Alicia "Mita" Espinel, 88, of Spotsylvania County passed away Friday, March 8, 2013.

She was born in Colombia, South America, and immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York in 1956 with her husband, Ciro "Pito," who predeceased her in 2004, and their five children ranging in age from 3 to 15 years. Mita was a loving and nurturing individual with great personal strength and determination.

Mita worked in the banking industry and was also a published journalist. She found the way to combine her career with raising a close-knit family. To her, this was the essence of her existence. She loved her husband, Ciro, her children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Ciro and his wife, Nury, of Miami, Fla.; son Al and his wife, Karen, of Wantagh, N.Y.; daughter Elsa Colt and her husband, Donald, of Fredericksburg; son Ed and Jerel-Lynn of Huntington, N.Y.; son Fernando "Fred" of Spotsylvania; and her 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Ely's Ford Rd., Spotsylvania, with the Rev. John Ziegler officiating.
