Edward Lewis Hammond Sr., 82, of Tappahannock, a retired building contractor, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Croxton Hammond. Ed is survived by his children, Dorothy Rutledge (Mike), Edward Hammond Jr. (Lynnette) and Kenneth Hammond; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, William Hammond; and sister Elizabeth Revere.
He served on the Tappahannock Town Council for 19 years and as mayor for 11 years. Ed was a life member of the Tappahannock-Essex Volunteer Fire Department and the Essex Jaycees. He also served in the Virginia State Firefighters Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Ed was in the Naval Reserves, a member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church, a founding member of the Tappahannock Volunteer Rescue Squad and previously served on the board of directors for the Northern Neck State Bank.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock.
