We've been regular readers of The Free Lance-Star for almost 20 years. We have always enjoyed having a newspaper that covered the local news and featured stories on local people and places.
However, we've also noticed that the FLS Food section is virtually devoid of anything covering the local food industry. Last week's section (March 13) had contributed articles from The Miami Herald, Modesto Bee, Akron Beacon Journal, The Associated Press, and others, but not a single article written about local restaurants, wineries, breweries, gourmet shops, local farms, farm markets or events, or anything having to do with the our extensive regional fare.
How about some regular articles featuring local food and drink?
The Fredericksburg region is halfway between D.C. and Richmond, which are both filled with outstanding, highly rated, independently owned restaurants. Fredericksburg and the surrounding area also have numerous excellent restaurants.
Our region has a number of independently owned wine shops and gourmet stores that have extensive knowledge of local product. Virginia also has one of the fastest-growing wine industries in the world. The commonwealth ranks as the fifth-largest wine grape producer in the country, and there are now more than 230 wineries in the state, with many in our region, and well within The Free Lance-Star's coverage area. Our area even has highly successful culinary programs at their high schools.
Articles featuring any of these subjects would be a welcome treat.
In addition, and very importantly, it helps our local economy when people buy and shop local. Features on locally owned food/drink businesses, programs, and events will only help continue this area's growth in the industry.
With our rich tradition of local fare, there is no reason that the FLS should be pulling articles from outside newspapers. There are local "foodies" throughout this area who would appreciate articles and features about the local gourmet food and drink industry. I'm sure you could even get local food business owners to write regular features as contribution pieces.
How about it, FLS? Can we get some local coverage in your Food section?
