William B. Ward

William Bruton Ward, 83, of Locust Grove passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at his home in Lake of the Woods surrounded by his family.

Bill was born June 30, 1929, to William Closs and Mary Edith Bruton Ward in Whiteville, N.C. He graduated from high school in Wilmington, N.C. He married Lois Jean Grubb on Dec. 5, 1953, celebrating more than 59 years of marriage. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Bill was a custom home builder in Northern Virginia for many years. After he and Lois retired in 1995, they moved to Lake of the Woods full-time after having been weekend residents for eight years. They were some of the original landowners in the development, having purchased a lot in 1968. Bill continued using his building skills with the local food bank, the Lions Club and the Lake of the Woods Church and projects for close friends. He also volunteered for more than eight years with the Rescue Squad. Bill was a man who did not want to sit still.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; one son, Thomas and wife Brenda Ward; one daughter, Linda and husband Kenneth Rankin; one daughter-in-law, Candace Ward; three brothers, Robert Ward, Johnny Ward and Donald Ward; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Ward; one brother, James Ward; and one sister, Kay Sathmary.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Laurel Hill Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Lake of the Woods Church, with the Rev. Thomas Schaffer officiating.
