Mary E. Merrell

Mary Evelyn Merrell, 87, of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, passed away at Mary Washington Hospital on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

She was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Shelbyville, Ill., a daughter of the late Ernest C. and Hazel F. Yencer Ragan. On Dec. 19, 1945, she was united in marriage to Robert H. Merrell, who preceded her in death on July 1, 2001.

She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her two sons, Lee Merrell and his wife, Alison, of Havre de Grace, Md., and Keith Merrell and his wife, Linda, of Lake of the Woods; one grandson, Robert, and his wife, Elizabeth; five great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Elizabeth, Ethan, Lillith and Tristan; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother Paul Ragan; three sisters, Beulah McKim, Thelma Shaffer and Irma Sutherland; and one grandson, Gregory Merrell.

Mary was a retired civil servant, housewife and mother. Robert and Mary lived on or near many Marine bases around the country, finally settling in Triangle. They later moved to Warsaw. Mary moved to Locust Grove after the death of her husband. She was a member of the Lake of the Woods Church in Locust Grove.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, at the Lake of the Woods Church, 1 Church Lane, Locust Grove.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions in memory of Mary Merrell be made to the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Box 8957, Topeka, Kan. 66608-8957.
