Cary Mitchener

Cary Pyke Kendall Mitchener, 56, of Roanoke died at home on Monday, April 15, 2013.

She was born to the late retired Marine Lt. Col. Donald J. Kendall Jr. and Lillian Graves Kendall on March 15, 1957, in Bethesda, Md. She graduated from Stafford High School, Mary Baldwin College and received a BSRN degree from the University of Virginia School of Nursing.

Cary married Dr. J. Samuel Mitchener III in 1986. They lived in Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Greenville, N.C., before relocating to Roanoke in 1990. She worked as a nurse at U.Va. Hospital, University of Pittsburg Medical Center and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Mitchener; and their son, James S. Mitchener IV of Roanoke; her mother, Lillian G. Kendall of Stafford County; three sisters, Anne Crigler (Waugh) of Charlottesville, Kay Howie (Benton) of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Rosa Sinnott (Robert) of Los Angeles; a brother, John Kendall (Ann Hall) of Richmond; two aunts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cary was avid about good health, nutrition and exercise, loved to dance and was a member of the Roanoke Valley Shag Club. She was devoted to her family and her husband's family and was loved by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a favorite charity in memory of Cary.

A memorial service was held Thursday, April 18, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Roanoke. A private burial will be held at Aquia Episcopal Church in Stafford.
